SLEEPWALKER (1984)
Bioscope Ltd. 49 mins.
Directed by Saxon Logan
Starring: Nickolas Grace, Joanna David, Bill Douglas, Heather Page, Raymond Huntley, Fulton Mackay, Michael Medwin.
Marion and Alex Brittain have invited Richard and Angela Paradise to dine at their mansion home, `Albion'. The crumbling, decaying state of the property forces them to adjourn to a local restaurant, where, over dinner, they engage in a heated debate on the state of the nation. During the conversation, details of Alex's sleep traumas are also revealed. The foursome return to `Albion' and continue their political/social/sexual discourse amid an increasingly uneasy atmosphere. As they retire to bed for the night, the characters begin to blur nightmares and reality - and one of the four, walking in their sleep, uses this confused twilight territory as the arena for murder and bloody mayhem…
SLEEPWALKER received its world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival, and was later screened at a London press show and at an Edinburgh tribute to Bill Douglas. The film has since languished, unreleased and unseen, for over 16 years. The British horror films website `Pass The Marmalade' (www.british-horror.fsnet.co.uk <http://www.british-horror.fsnet.co.uk>) even speculated that the movie might be a hoax item, until director Saxon Logan revealed that both he and SLEEPWALKER did indeed exist! Since then, with the assistance of `Pass The Marmalade' compiler Darrell Buxton, Logan has made a 35mm print of the film available and is currently seeking to bring his work to a new audience.
Saxon Logan worked as an assistant on O LUCKY MAN! at the age of 17, and enjoyed a long association and friendship with director Lindsay Anderson for many years. The mentor's influence pervades throughout SLEEPWALKER, which follows the example of Anderson's BRITANNIA HOSPITAL in mixing political and social discussion with genre filmmaking at its most extreme. The film also features a rare acting appearance by celebrated, award-winning director Bill Douglas (MY CHILDHOOD/MY AIN FOLK) in the role of `Alex'.
Saxon Logan has worked as an editor, producer and director for the BBC (notably making documentaries on sculptor Raymond Mason and actor/writer Dirk Bogarde for `Omnibus'), and has also been responsible for a number of award-winning documentaries for British television on African themes. He is currently working, in association with Euroscript and the Department of Culture, Media & Sport, on a new screenplay entitled `Freedom'.
